A joint survey by the National Highways Authority of India and the Public Works Department has identified 940 encroachments along six major highways in Kanpur. According to the findings, the largest concentration was recorded on the IIT Kalyanpur-Rama Devi stretch, where 701 encroachments were found.
The survey report has been submitted to the state government, with authorities seeking action to clear the occupied spaces. Officials are aiming to address bottlenecks on key road corridors that carry heavy traffic and are seen as important for daily movement across the city.
The proposed removals are being linked to both traffic management and road safety. Encroachments along highways can narrow carriageways, disrupt vehicle flow and increase risks for motorists and pedestrians, especially on busy urban stretches.
With the survey now complete, the focus is likely to shift toward how and when enforcement is carried out. Any cleanup on these major highway routes would be expected to improve traffic conditions and make travel safer on some of Kanpur's most congested roads.
