India’s edible oil industry is pressing for a review of import rules after reporting a sharp increase in refined oil shipments from Nepal. The Indian Vegetable Oil Producers' Association has asked the central government to urgently examine the current framework, saying duty-free imports have risen dramatically in recent years.

At the center of the concern is a reported 17-fold surge in imports of refined edible oil from Nepal. Industry representatives argue that the jump is linked to refining activity moving across the border, allowing products to enter India under more favorable tariff conditions.

The association says this trend is putting pressure on domestic processors and refiners, who face a different cost structure while competing in the local market. The industry’s appeal suggests that the present arrangement may be creating an uneven playing field for Indian companies involved in edible oil refining.

The call for a policy review highlights wider concerns over trade rules, value addition, and how import benefits are being used. Any government response is likely to be closely watched by edible oil producers, importers, and food businesses that depend on stable pricing and supply.
