JetBlue Airways has won Spirit Airlines’ takeoff and landing slots at New York’s LaGuardia Airport, giving the carrier room for as many as 12 round-trip flights. The move marks a notable shift at one of the country’s most crowded airports, where access is tightly controlled and expansion opportunities are limited.
The airline is also considering a return to the Marine Air Terminal, the facility previously used by Spirit at LaGuardia. A move there would represent another important piece of JetBlue’s airport strategy as carriers compete for scarce gates, terminal space and operating times in New York.
LaGuardia has long been a high-stakes market for airlines because of its location and the restrictions on flight slots. Any redistribution of those slots can quickly alter competition, especially when a carrier gains enough access to add multiple daily departures and arrivals.
For JetBlue, the newly awarded Spirit slots could strengthen its position in a constrained market while giving it more flexibility in how it serves travelers from LaGuardia. The development also highlights the broader battle among airlines for limited space at major U.S. airports, where even modest gains can have an outsized impact.
