India became the world’s leading market for long-term liquefied natural gas purchasing in 2025, according to the 2026 annual report from the International Group of LNG Importers, or GIIGNL. The report said India signed contracts totaling 8.4 million tons per year, putting it ahead of other buyers in the global LNG market.
The ranking highlights India’s growing role in securing future gas supplies through longer-duration agreements. Long-term LNG deals are commonly used by importers to improve supply visibility and reduce exposure to short-term market swings, making them an important tool for energy planning.
GIIGNL’s findings point to stronger Indian activity in a market where countries continue to balance energy security, affordability, and fuel demand. India’s position as the most active long-term buyer suggests continued interest in expanding access to imported natural gas as part of its broader energy mix.
The report adds another signal that India is becoming a more influential player in global LNG trade. With large contracted volumes announced for 2025, the country’s buying activity is likely to remain closely watched by producers, traders, and competing import markets.
