A new study has examined how sitting position may shape body posture and comfort during smartphone gaming. The research focused on the immediate effects of different seated setups on cervical posture, trunk alignment, perceived musculoskeletal discomfort, and ergonomic risk.
According to the study description, researchers compared three common positions: sitting on a chair with a backrest, sitting on a chair without a backrest, and sitting cross-legged on the floor. The work used a randomized within-subject design, meaning the same participants were assessed across each posture condition.
The study centered on smartphone gaming, an activity that often involves prolonged screen viewing and sustained neck and upper-body positioning. To evaluate possible strain, the researchers looked at neck and trunk posture, recorded discomfort reported by participants, and used a RULA-based ergonomic risk assessment, a tool commonly used to judge postural load and workstation-related risk.
The research adds to growing interest in how everyday device use can affect musculoskeletal health. By comparing several seated positions during gaming, the study helps clarify how posture choices may be linked to short-term ergonomic stress and physical discomfort when using smartphones.
