West Bengal has cleared petroleum exploration and mining leases for ONGC in four districts, a move that could strengthen the state’s role in domestic hydrocarbon production. The decision is expected to support fresh upstream activity while improving the outlook for energy development in the region.

The state government is also looking at the financial upside from the move. Higher exploration and production can translate into increased royalty income, adding a revenue boost alongside broader industrial and infrastructure benefits tied to energy projects.

Another key part of the push is the expansion of city gas distribution infrastructure. Projects valued at Rs 5,322 crore are linked to widening the gas pipeline network, which can improve fuel access for homes, businesses and other users as connectivity expands.

Taken together, the leases and gas network build-out point to a wider energy strategy in West Bengal. By backing ONGC’s exploration plans and supporting pipeline investment, the state is positioning itself for higher output, stronger energy infrastructure and greater participation in the hydrocarbon value chain.
