India’s power system has already shown how sensitive the grid can be when electricity demand changes suddenly. The widely remembered lights-off event in April 2020 served as a striking reminder that grid management requires constant balancing, quick response and careful planning.
That experience strengthens the case for a more proactive energy policy, especially as solar power becomes a larger part of the electricity mix. Solar generation is abundant during daylight hours, but demand patterns do not always match when that power is available. Without enough storage, part of that clean energy cannot be used as effectively as it could be.
Battery storage is emerging as a practical answer to this gap. It can store surplus solar electricity and release it when demand rises, helping smooth fluctuations and reducing pressure on the grid. A stronger storage network would also make renewable energy more dependable and help utilities manage sudden changes more efficiently.
The broader message is that energy planning cannot remain reactive. If India wants to get the most from solar power while maintaining reliability, investment and policy support for battery storage need to move higher on the agenda. A grid built for the future will depend not only on generating more clean power, but also on being able to store and dispatch it when needed.
