The trimmed account also indicates that when isosteviol was combined with the antidepressant duloxetine, the effect on bacterial growth was especially notable, pointing to a possible interaction between food additives and medicines.
The study matters because even small changes in the growth of gut microbes can alter the balance of bacteria in the digestive system. Scientists are increasingly examining whether everyday ingredients, including sweeteners, may affect that balance in ways that deserve closer attention.
