European regulators have approved the proposed $110bn merger involving Paramount and Warner Bros Discovery, giving the deal an important boost in one of the world’s biggest markets. The decision from the European Commission moves the transaction forward internationally, even as the merger remains stalled in the United States.

The EU’s clearance was not unconditional. According to the announcement, Brussels signed off on the deal with requirements attached for Paramount, suggesting regulators wanted safeguards in place before allowing the tie-up to proceed. Those conditions mark a key part of the approval and show that competition concerns were still part of the review.

Despite the European green light, the merger is still facing a legal obstacle in the US. That means the companies do not yet have a fully clear path to completion, and the timeline for closing the transaction remains uncertain while American proceedings continue.

If it ultimately goes ahead, the merger would rank among the largest media deals in recent years and could reshape the competitive balance in the global entertainment business. For now, however, EU approval is only one step, with the US challenge still standing in the way of final completion.
