Disha Eye Hospitals has reached the milestone of 20,000 cornea transplants, marking a major point in its eye bank and transplant work. The achievement highlights both the scale of corneal treatment services and the continued importance of donation and surgical access for patients with serious vision problems.
Even with this progress, Bengal still requires around 4,000 corneas each year. That gap shows that the need for transplant support remains significant, especially for patients whose sight can only be restored through corneal replacement.
At the same time, the report points to a drop in transplant demand compared with earlier levels. This appears to be linked to better eye care, earlier treatment and stronger public awareness, which can help prevent some cases from advancing to the stage where a transplant becomes necessary.
The trend reflects a changing healthcare picture: transplant services remain essential, but improved prevention and timely medical attention are reducing some of the pressure. For Bengal, the challenge now is balancing ongoing cornea availability with broader efforts to improve eye health across the state.
