Mutton prices in Kolkata are holding firm in the Rs 1,100-1,200 per kg range as the local market continues to face a supply shortage. The tight availability of goats has kept retail rates elevated, leaving little room for any immediate decline in prices.
A key reason behind the pressure is reduced supply after Eid-uz-Zuha, a period that can affect livestock availability in the market. With fewer animals reaching sellers, retailers are continuing to pass on higher costs to consumers.
The situation has also been shaped by regulatory enforcement, which appears to have added to the supply constraints. At the same time, higher wholesale rates are feeding into retail pricing, making mutton costlier across the city.
For now, the market remains in a high-price band, with buyers seeing little relief at the counter. Unless supply improves meaningfully, mutton rates in Kolkata are likely to stay firm at current levels.
