Peacock delivered a major milestone for NBCUniversal in the second quarter, adding 2 million paid subscribers to reach 48 million and posting its first quarterly profit. Comcast said in its earnings report that the streaming service earned $189 million in the three months ended in June, marking the platform’s first period in the black.

The result stands out as an important shift for Peacock after a long push to build scale in a crowded streaming market. Reaching profitability while still growing its subscriber base suggests the service is starting to gain more traction as Comcast works to improve the economics of its direct-to-consumer business.

Comcast’s update also pointed to the studio side of the company as a notable area of strength. That combination of improving streaming performance and solid studio results gives NBCUniversal a stronger foundation as it looks across its broader media business.

With Peacock now profitable for the quarter, Comcast appears to have more momentum as it weighs its next strategic move. The latest earnings report shows a company trying to balance streaming growth with a wider entertainment portfolio that includes both content production and distribution.
