India used the 16th BRICS Health Ministers' Meeting in Chandigarh to spotlight the changes it says are reshaping the country’s healthcare system. Union Health Minister J P Nadda said India has pursued transformative reforms aimed at strengthening care delivery through people-centric policies and wider access to health services.

The meeting also produced a broader outcome for the BRICS grouping, with member nations adopting a declaration focused on deeper health cooperation and stronger systems. The agreement signals a shared push among the countries to work more closely on public health priorities and institutional capacity.

A key development from the gathering was the creation of a network for mental wellness research and collaboration. The move places mental health more firmly on the BRICS agenda and reflects growing interest in joint research, knowledge-sharing and coordinated approaches in this area.

Taken together, the discussions in Chandigarh highlighted both India’s domestic healthcare reform message and the wider BRICS effort to expand cooperation in health. The meeting underscored how access, system strengthening and mental wellness are becoming central themes in the bloc’s health policy discussions.
