The recent rally in Indian government bonds may start to lose strength as market hopes for inclusion in Bloomberg’s Global Aggregate Index appear to be fading. Without a clear sign that local sovereign debt will be added soon, expectations for strong foreign buying are weakening.

A major part of the earlier optimism was tied to overseas portfolio flows. If those inflows begin to slow, traders may see less support for further gains in bond prices. That shift could reduce momentum in a market that had been lifted by the prospect of broader index-linked demand.

Another factor is the narrowing yield gap between Indian bonds and debt in developed markets. As that difference becomes less attractive, the relative appeal of Indian government securities may ease for some global investors. This could limit how far yields fall from current levels.

Market participants are also watching domestic pressures, including higher borrowing and inflation concerns, which may keep yields moving within a narrow range rather than extending the rally. Taken together, softer index-entry hopes, slower foreign interest and local supply factors point to a more restrained outlook for Indian bonds.
