The US government has approved a test launch by California startup Reflect Orbital for a satellite carrying a giant mirror intended to reflect sunlight toward Earth after dark. The proposed mirror is described as 60 feet, or about 18 metres, wide.
According to the company’s stated goal, the technology could be used to brighten areas on the ground at night. Reflect Orbital says the reflected light might one day help illuminate streets and support solar farms outside normal daylight hours.
The idea has already drawn controversy, with critics likely to focus on the impact of adding artificial light from orbit. Even so, the federal approval marks an important step for the company as it moves from concept toward a real-world demonstration.
If the test goes ahead, it will put renewed attention on how space-based infrastructure could be used for energy and lighting applications on Earth. The project also adds to a broader debate over the benefits and risks of using satellites in ways that directly affect the night sky.
