England is set to see a major expansion in community mental health support under a £343 million NHS plan. Up to 159 new mental health centres are due to open across the country from the autumn, with services placed closer to where people live.
The rollout is designed to give patients earlier access to help in local neighbourhoods rather than waiting until problems become more severe. By moving more support into community settings, the plan focuses on making mental health care easier to reach and more responsive at an earlier stage.
A key part of the expansion is specialist crisis care outside A&E. The new NHS mental health centres are intended to provide dedicated support for people in urgent need, offering an alternative setting to hospital emergency departments for some mental health crises.
The government says the wider aim is to strengthen local mental health services across England through community-based care. With up to 159 sites planned, the programme represents a significant increase in local NHS mental health provision over the coming months.
