Lucid has delayed the launch of its Cosmos vehicle until next year, adding more pressure on the electric car maker as it works through a reported $1 billion second-quarter loss. The setback affects a model that appears central to the company’s near-term plans.
The Cosmos is described as a compact electric crossover and is expected to play a major role in expanding Lucid’s lineup beyond its current offerings. For the Newark, California-based automaker, the vehicle looks especially important because it could help the brand reach a broader part of the EV market.
At the same time, the delay highlights the financial strain facing Lucid. A loss of this size raises fresh questions about how quickly the company can bring new products to market while managing cash burn and maintaining operations long enough to scale production.
The combination of a postponed launch and heavy quarterly losses leaves Lucid in a difficult position. It needs the Cosmos to succeed, but it also needs enough financial stability to get the crossover into production and in front of buyers next year.
