Researchers say a protein best known for protecting the ends of chromosomes may have a second, unexpected job in muscle healing. The study points to TRF2 as a key factor that helps muscle stem cells stay prepared to respond when tissue is damaged.
According to the findings, TRF2 supports the identity of these stem cells and helps them move through the normal cycle of rest, repair and renewal. When that process works properly, injured muscle can rebuild itself instead of breaking down further.
The research suggests that without this protein, the repair system begins to fail. Rather than regenerating healthy muscle, damaged tissue is more likely to be replaced by fat and scar tissue, a change that can weaken recovery.
The work adds a new layer to scientists' understanding of how muscle stem cells are maintained. It also highlights TRF2 as more than a chromosome-protection protein, linking it to the basic biology of muscle regeneration after injury.
