A new mouse study suggests the brain may face an energy shortfall during dreaming. According to the research highlighted by SciTechDaily, activity in REM sleep appears to rise sharply while neurons may be burning through fuel faster than it can be replaced.

That points to a hidden metabolic imbalance in the dreaming brain. Even though REM sleep is often linked with vivid dreams and intense internal brain activity, the findings suggest this state may come with a temporary mismatch between energy demand and energy supply.

Researchers say that imbalance could help explain why REM sleep is important for complex internal processing. If the brain is operating in a high-demand mode during dreaming, it may reveal something about how sleep supports functions that are not visible from the outside but remain critical to brain activity.

Because the work was done in mice, the results do not automatically mean the same process happens in people in exactly the same way. Still, the study adds to growing interest in how brain metabolism changes across sleep states and why REM sleep may be uniquely demanding for neurons.
