University students in Shizuoka are using Minecraft to imagine how a future city on the Moon could be planned. Their project combines the building game’s digital environment with educational materials supervised by the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA).

The work brings programming and spatial design together, giving students a way to explore how lunar facilities and living spaces might be organized. Rather than treating Minecraft only as entertainment, the project uses its creative tools to support learning about a possible space settlement.

The Shizuoka initiative highlights how familiar digital platforms can help students examine complex ideas in science and design. By constructing a virtual lunar city, they are considering the challenges of creating places where people could potentially live beyond Earth.
