Astronomers are examining a mysterious object in the Milky Way that appears to be acting as an exceptionally powerful natural particle accelerator. The source is located in the direction of the constellation Aquila and is sending out particles at energies that rank among the highest seen in our galaxy.

According to the report, the object can drive protons beyond one quadrillion electron volts. That would make it vastly more energetic than the Large Hadron Collider, with the source described as reaching roughly 100 times the power of the world’s best-known human-built particle machine.

The finding points to a cosmic engine capable of pushing matter to extreme speeds under conditions that scientists still do not fully understand. Because the object has not been clearly identified, it adds to a growing list of high-energy mysteries inside the Milky Way, where researchers are trying to determine what kinds of environments can generate such intense particle emissions.
