Asteroid 44 Nysa, located in the belt between Mars and Jupiter, has a rare three-lobed structure that is prompting astronomers to reconsider established ideas about asteroid formation. The object is named after the mythical valley associated with Dionysus’s secret upbringing by nymphs.

Using observations from the Hubble Space Telescope, researchers determined that Nysa has an unusually complex shape. Its three distinct lobes set it apart from the simpler forms commonly considered in models of how asteroids develop and evolve.
