NASA has approved Dragonfly, an ambitious mission that will send a nuclear-powered rotorcraft across Titan, Saturn’s largest moon. Unlike a conventional rover, the vehicle is designed to fly between locations on another world, making it one of NASA’s most unusual planetary missions.
Titan is the only known world beyond Earth with a weather cycle that includes rain, rivers and seas. Its lakes and shorelines are shaped not by water but by methane and other hydrocarbons, creating an environment unlike any found on Earth.
The car-sized drone will investigate Titan’s complex chemistry, focusing on molecular building blocks associated with the processes that can precede life.
