A study from Zhejiang University examines the often-overlooked role of photovoltaic manufacturers in reducing emissions during the global energy transition. The research focuses on how production itself contributes to wider decarbonization efforts.

The analysis quantifies these contributions and identifies strategic timing for policy changes. It points to 2035 as a significant milestone for China and 2030 as a broader global reference point.

According to the study, the findings could support a shift in government policy from measures that encourage photovoltaic manufacturing toward more restrictive approaches as the industry’s decarbonization contribution develops.

The work was conducted by researchers associated with Zhejiang University’s State Key Laboratory of Clean Energy Utilization and its School of Public Affairs in Hangzhou, China.
